Terra dei Forti
Book hotels, agritourism, B&B in Terra dei Forti:
the river Adige valley
Come to the Land of Forts to discover its wines. A land set, like a
pearl, in the Vallagarina, rich in nature, history and tradition. Here unique
wines have been produced for centuries. They are precious wines that will
never conquer the mass markets: the winemakers of the Land of Forts are well
aware of this and so have always concentrated on quality by using and
improving the traditional techniques.
Besides these unique wines this land offers its visitors many natural and historical
beauties. Ever since 1000, the River Adige has been surrounded by this crown
of castles and forts that represent the clearest traces left in this
territory.
It is a captivating one of a kind architectonic belt and goes from the Rocca
di Rivoli to the Castle of Avio.
But the visitor will also be struck by the naturalistic appeal of this area:
in fact, it is part of the regional park of Lessinia and the regional
park of Monte Baldo (the latter will be established very soon).
The visitor can enjoy long journeys by mountain-bike, rafting on the River
Adige, trekking and horse riding.

Gardayou
travel guide:
Castles
Vallagarina has always been a land of forts ever since the times of
the Roman conquest. And in fact, this has always been a fundamental line of
communication with north and Mid-Europe.
The ridges overlooking the valley are dotted with fortresses, castles and
forts along a historical itinerary characterized by the clash of the sacred
and the profane. In fact, Vallagarina was passed through by armies as well as
by pilgrims going to Rome and this pilgrimage was complemented by many
churches. Starting from Brentino, you can reach on foot one of the
most striking places of worship, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Corona.
The Castle of Avio is the most important fortalice in this area. It
was built between the eleventh and the thirteenth century on a previous
building and was the main Apartments of the Castelbarco family who planned to
control the whole valley. This imposing manor is a remarkable example of the
military architecture in a sub-alpine environment.
The Fort of Rivoli is typical of the whole valley. It was built on the
ruins of an ancient fortress that was almost completely destroyed by the
emperor Frederick Barbarossa ("Redbeard") on one of his many visits
to Italy to fight against the rioting communities in the second half of the
twelfth century.
But Rivoli occupies an important place in history most of all for its
battle that saw Napoleon fight and win against the Habsburg army in 1797. In
spite of being surrounded by the Austrians, Napoleon was able to transform
the situation and claim victory. A visit to the Napoleonic Museum of
Rivoli is not to be missed.
The Baldo
mountain: an extraordinary nature
The Botanical Garden of Baldo
is located at 1232 m in Località Novezzina, not far from Ferrara di Monte
Baldo and is run by the Comunità Montana (Mountain Community) of Baldo
together with the State Forest Corps.
It was established to enhance the extraordinary flora of Baldo resulting from
the unique surrounding climatic conditions.
Starting from the lakeshore and from the low sides of Valdadige, we can find
evergreen plants typical of the Mediterranean environment, while just above
it is possible to find species belonging to the alpine areas, both rocky and
meadowland. In the past centuries, this wide variety attracted many botanists
who found for the first time on Baldo many species that had been unknown
until then. This fact explains why many flowers have been identified with the
word "Baldense" (Anemone Baldense T., Galium Baldense Spr., Knautia
Baldensis Kern etc.) and why Baldo was called "Hortus Europae"
(Garden of Europe). In the Botanical Garden hundreds of native species are
gathered together, not including those imported from other
geographical areas. Ecological stays are also possible.

Lessinia
The general public doesn't know
it yet, but the Park of Lessinia is to become one of the major
eco-tourism attractions with its naturalistic beauties, its museums as well
as with its eno-gastronomic specialities.
In brief, Lessinia is the ideal place for a holiday rich in history, nature
and typical flavours.
Lessinia is full of wonders: first of all, the Cimbrians, a Bavarian
community that has lived in the area of Giazza for centuries while keeping
unchanged their ancient traditions up to today. Then the "trombini"
of San Bortolo - a harquebus weighing 50 kg - that have become
remarkable specimens of the local craftsmanship and that are used today to
enliven the local feasts.
It is worth mentioning also the "pesciara" of Bolca where
every year rock fossils are discovered dating back to 50 millions of years
ago and also the museum of Boscochiesanuova that preserves the secrets of
wood art and of the mountain agriculture.
Finally, you cannot miss the karsic area of Camposilvano with the
grotta del Capriolo (grotto of the deer) of Roverè.

Prehistory. The area around Sant'Anna D'Alfaedo is the
ideal place to observe the human evolution in Lessinia. Its stone caves
reflect a long history dating back to the Palaeolithic period. Moreover, here
in Lessinia there is a real treasure, the Bridge of Veja: it is a gigantic
arch made of grey-reddish rock and is what remains of the vault of a huge
cave where animals and small human groups used to shelter in the past.
The museum of Sant'Anna D'Alfaedo is open form May 15th to September
15th, every day except Monday, from 9.30 to 12.30 a.m. and from 3.30 to 6.30
p.m.
For further information and reservations: tel. 045 7532656.
Flowers and waterfalls. The park with the waterfalls of Molina is certainly a
wonderful place and is crossed by many marked paths that meander along the
torrent immersed in a flourishing flora.
The lovers of nature must visit the Botanical Museum that preserves
the secret flora of Lessinia: it is open in July and August, all days except
Monday, from 10 to 12 a.m. and from 3 to 6 p.m.
For further information and reservations: tel. 045 7720222.
